Pit Bull Kills Child in Jacksonville Home

Sunday night, a family's pet dog attacked and killed their three day old child in the Arlington area of Jacksonville, Florida. After the attack, the child was taken to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center where he died. According to the family, the dog had never previously shown signs of aggression.

This sad and tragic event is all too common; however, fatal dog attacks are very rare. Children are often the victims of such attacks as they are often unaware that a dog is becoming agitated.

Our Jacksonville injury attorneys have handled a lot of dog bite cases. It is very common that a dog involved in such an incident never attacked anyone before. In Florida, the owners of any dog that bites someone is liable for the person's injuries even if the dog did not have a history of agression.

Because of this, more and more homeowner's insurers are excluding dog attacks or bites from coverage. Other insurers exclude certain breeds from coverage including pit bulls, rottweilers and german shepards. All people, especially parents, must remain vigilant when allowing dogs around children.

Jacksonville Man Files Medical Malpractice Suit Against NAS Jacksonville Hospital

A medical malpractice lawsuit has been filed against the NAS Jacksonville Hospital by a man claiming that the hospital failed to diagnose that he was suffering from a brain anuerysm. The man went to the hospital with a severe headache and claims the hospital did nothing and sent him home. Later the man went to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, where the anuerysm was diagnosed and emergency surgery was performed. Unfortunately, the man has suffered from brain injury and partial paralysis, which he claims to have occured by reason of the delay in diagnosis.

Often we hear of catatrophic rupturing of a brain or abdominal aortic anuerysm in which the victim dies from internal bleeding extremely quickly. However, slow leaking anuerysms can be survivable if caught early. An anuerysm itself happens when the wall of an artery becomes weakened and balloons outward. Eventually the weakened wall of the artery can rupture resulting in internal bleeding. If not treated, the situation will become catastrophic.

Our firm tried a medical malpractice case in Jacksonville involving the slow rupture of an aortic anuerysm which eventually caused death. Several days before his death the man complained of unrelentiing back pain and presented to his primary care doctor. The primary care doctor misdiagnosed that he was merely suffering from an enlarged prostate and sent him home with prostate medicine. Sadly, he lost blood until he suffered a fatal stroke.

Medical malpractice cases like these are very complex and require numerous medical experts, who typically charge anywhere from $300.00 to $750.00 per hour. Because of this, if you have a medical malpractice case, we recommend that you hire an experienced lawyer with the resources to fund such a case.

Baker County Accident Kills One Injures Two Others

One woman was killed in a single vehicle accident in Baker County Tuesday. Baker County is located about twenty minutes west of Jacksonville, Florida. The woman was a passenger in a pickup truck. The driver of the truck lost control and drove into a ditch. The truck then hit a culvert and rolled over. All three occupants of the truck were ejected.

A second passenger suffered serious personal injuries and was taken to Shands Medical Center in Gainesville. The driver did not suffer serious injuries.

This provides us yet another example of the danger of not wearing a seatbelt, especially if a vehicle rolls over in an accident.

Car Crash on A1A in Ponte Vedra Sends Woman to Hospital

A woman driving approximately 100 miles per hour on A1A in St. Johns County, Florida, lost control of her car and was ejected when the car rolled over. Deputies were attempting to catch up with the woman but because of her excess speed did not reach her until after the car accident occured. The woman was airlifted to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center.

The reason for her reckless driving has not been reported. Thankfully, she did not cause an accident with another vehicle. Situations like this are a good reminder of the importance of uninsured motorist coverage. Often people that are willing to put others at risk do not have much, if any, bodily injury insurance coverage. If you are injured by such a driver, your own uninsured motorist coverage may be your only source to pay your medical bills and replace your lost wages.
