Jacksonville Couple Seriously Injured in Rollover Crash in Alachua County

A couple from Jacksonville, Florida, was travelling on I-75 in Alachua County Florida, when their Ford Explorer experienced a blown tire. The blown tire caused the driver to lose control and swerve sharply resulting in the vehicle rolling over and striking trees.

Thankfully, both the driver and passenger were seatbelted. According to police, they did however, suffer serious personal injuries.

In recent years, numerous product liability lawsuits have been filed against Ford Motor Company alleging that its Ford Explorers tip or roll over too easily. Florida Nursing Home Fined $18,000.00

Many of the nursing homes throughout Florida including Jacksonville provide excellent care to their residents. However, some do not and nursing home abuse causes needless suffering to our most vulnerable citizens.

Florida state regulators fined a West Palm Beach Nursing Home $18,000.00 after a resident was infected by maggots from a wound inside a cast on his broken leg. The nursing home's care plan required that the wound be cared for every three days; however, the nursing home could only provide documentation that it did so once a week.

Earlier this year, the nursing home in question was placed on a watch list by the state because of its poor performance on inspections. The nursing home was rated a one out of a possible five stars on its inspection grade, including just one star for quality of care.

Prior to this incident the state warned there was “immediate jeopardy” to residents' health and safety for various care violations. To check out Florida’s watch list and get other state ratings of nursing homes, click here.

Some Seat Belt Laws You May Not Know

Our Jacksonville injury lawyers regularly meet with clients throughout Jacksonville, Orange Park, St. Augustine, Fernandina, and Callahan who were injured in automobile and truck accidents. Thankfully, their personal injuries have often been minimized by the use of a seat belt.

While we all likely know that drivers and passengers in the front seat must wear a seatbelt at all times, here are some more important facts regarding Florida's laws:

All rear passengers under the age of 18 must wear a seatbelt.

Children ages 3 years and younger must be secured in a federally approved child restraint seat.

Children ages 4-5 years must be secured either by a seatbelt or a federally approved child restraint seat. This can include the use of a booster seat in conjunction with the vehicle seatbelt.

Drivers are legally responsible for ensuring that children in the vehicle are properly restrained.

Tragic Death of Three Students in Car Accident Reminds Us of the Importance of Seatbelts

Last Friday, three students on their last day of school died in an automobile accident while driving on I-295 in Duval County on the way to the beach. A tire separated on the Ford Explorer they were traveling in which caused the driver to lose control. The car flipped three times. crash0605.jpg

Sadly, eight of the students were not wearing seatbelts. All eight were ejected from the sport utility vehicle. In addition to the three that died, the other five were seriously injured. The only person wearing a seatbelt was treated and released.

As Jacksonville injury attorneys, we see this far too often for it to be a coincidence, especially when a vehicle rolls over as being ejected from a rolling vehicle almost always results in tragic injuries. Several blog entries on this site refer to other similar incidents. The importance of seatbelts cannot be overstated.
